The Love of God in Response to Laura and Harvey
“Our help is in the Name of the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth.” - Psalm 124:8
The last couple of days Sarah and I checked Space City Weather almost compulsively. We got things ready and moved all possible projectiles off our yard and porch. We prayed constantly as Hurricane Laura made its way through the gulf. When it finally became clear that the storm had shifted east we started worrying about the people in the path. I wanted to feel relieved we were no longer in the path and I was aware of some of the possible repercussions of experiencing the storm in our community, but I just worried about people who would inevitably experience the impact of this massive storm.
We had recorded the service for Sunday when it was just a tropical depression as we weren’t sure where we would be later in the week. Blessedly, I waited to write my Spirit Shot article until Thursday. I was speaking with Rozalyn Stuckey about Hurricane Laura and she accepted my invitation to share what was on her mind. At the moment, we are hoping to collect funds to pass on, and we will let you know as we determine future opportunities to care for our neighbors. Here are Roz’s beautiful words:
“In the wake of Hurricane Laura and on the anniversary of Harvey, I am reminded of all of the trauma that my family and so many others experienced when Harvey ravaged our community. But, even more than the trauma, I am reminded of the one enduring feeling I experienced in the storm’s aftermath: Even in the darkest days, there is so much light in the world. It is impossible for me to express the depth of my gratitude for all the love that was shown to us. I know that so many of you feel the same way. Making a monetary donation to Hurricane Relief is one way that we can show another community the same love we all felt and offer light in the difficult days ahead as these communities begin the journey of recovery. Help us to make it a journey of being cared for like our community experienced.”
I know that our community recalls the experience of Harvey around this time every year. To have another possible storm was very difficult to imagine. I pray that we will be reminded that three years ago we knew God was with us and we were not alone. We knew the comfort of God in taking care of one another. Join us in praying for those impacted and help us remind them that they are not alone either. Join in proclaiming the love of God through caring action.
We love you and God loves you.
